This was such a great experience. Being able to learn about the African history of Portugal with Naky was undeniably touching. Naky is very knowledgeable about history and has a true passion for spreading the truth. He is also very welcoming and encourages connecting with new people. To top it all off, he supports the local Black owned businesses in the area and has a wonderful rapport with them all. I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in Black people. Also, don’t be intimidated by the 4 hours of walking. It’s an easy pace and plenty of stops.

This was my favourite tour that I’ve been on. Naki is knowledgeable, expressive and captivating to listen to. He fosters communication amongst the group and everyone has their own unique experiences, and backgrounds to share. The group really gets involved and passionate about the subject matter, fostered by Naki’s passion. My boyfriend and I did this tour on our first day in Portugal and it was a great introduction to the city from the African perspective. We ended up at a restaurant at the end which I highly recommend. The food was incredible and you were sitting a the table with what now felt like friends continuing the discussion of many of the topics discussed. A great learning experience. A must!

This tour was incredible. From start to finish. Not only did I learn so much, I also got a chance to connect with the city of Lisbon on such a deeper, emotional level. The 4-hours went by so fast and the walking was easy to moderate. Would highly recommend!!

Unforgettable: cool people, real talk, important history

This was my fourth time in Lisbon and the first time doing this tour—can’t recommend it enough.

Naky makes talking about uncomfortable subjects (Portugal’s colonial history and the transatlantic slave trade) comfortable with his engaging attitude, along with the lovely people who were on this tour with me. It was everything rolled into one: it was a close community, a classroom, a family gathering…

There were plenty of spots to stop and chat in the shade, restroom and drink opportunities along the way, and ended with the *best* dinner at a local restaurant, the kind where waitstaff help you navigate the menu and people are dancing with babies in the street.

A cool, unique experience in the city, something you won’t really find anywhere else.

This was the BEST tour I’ve ever gone on. Naky was such a great and knowledgeable guide who centered African history and Portugal’s role in the slave trade and colonization. He was witty and made the tour really enjoyable for everyone. By the end of the tour, it felt like we were all part of one big family. I definitely want to take the tour again and will be recommending to all my friends and family.

As a solo traveler to Lisbon, I wanted to learn more of the history of the city than a typical walking tour could give. This tour was engaging with lots of chances for questions, reflection, and conversation among the group members. Ending with dinner at the African restaurant was incredible, and some of us stayed very late talking. If you want to go deeper into the realistic and complicated history behind a beautiful city, this is a tour for you.

In terms of walking: There wasn’t a ton of walking at one time. We ended at Green Street which isn’t a great distance, but we did a LOT of stairs at one point. You get a chance to stop, rest, sit down, or use the restroom if need be.

The African Lisbon Tour is a must for those who want to learn the history of enslaved Africans brought to Portugal. Naki is a great narrator and provides a wealth of information about the slave trade as well as the Black experience in Portugal today. I highly recommend this tour. Also, we had a delicious meal at Mambo restaurant. The group dinner was a perfect way to end the day.

A great informational and personal tour on African history in Portugal. I learned a lot about the slave trade and definitely didn’t know it started here. Enjoyed the restaurant stops and the great food at Mambo. Naky is very friendly and down to earth. You’ll feel very comfortable on this tour and his knowledge is outstanding. Recommend this tour to all seeking the real information on African history of Portugal.

I definitely recommend booking this tour if you want to experience a version of history that doesn’t cater to a European-Imperialist gaze. I learnt so much about the true history of Portugal and Lisbon. Although I knew Portugal was the first European nation to engage in colonisation and the transatlantic slave trade, I did not know the extent to which this was and the extensive history Africans have in Portugal. It gave me such a clearer view of my own history and provided a lot of resources for further research.

This is a necessary tour to take if you plan to visit Lisbon.

Naky is so amazing at what he does.
