This was such a great experience. Being able to learn about the African history of Portugal with Naky was undeniably touching. Naky is very knowledgeable about history and has a true passion for spreading the truth. He is also very welcoming and encourages connecting with new people. To top it all off, he supports the local Black owned businesses in the area and has a wonderful rapport with them all. I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in Black people. Also, don’t be intimidated by the 4 hours of walking. It’s an easy pace and plenty of stops.
During my time in Lisbon, I had the absolute pleasure of being guided by Naky Gaglo, whose presence truly elevated the entire experience from enjoyable to unforgettable. From the very beginning, his depth of knowledge was evident—not just in the African history and landmarks of Lisbon, but in the cultural nuances, local traditions, and hidden gems that most visitors would never discover on their own. Every detail he shared felt intentional, enriching, and deeply rooted in authenticity.
What set Naky apart, however, was not just his expertise, but his warmth. He brought an energy that made everyone feel welcomed, comfortable, and genuinely cared for. It never felt like a standard tour. It felt personal, like being shown around by someone who truly wanted you to experience Lisbon, but through the eyes of Africa, in the most meaningful way possible.
Beyond the planned itinerary, Naky went above and beyond by extending himself through thoughtful extracurricular activities. Whether it was recommending unique local spots, helping us navigate the city with ease, or simply ensuring that each moment was enjoyable, he consistently exceeded expectations. His willingness to go the extra mile created a sense of ease and excitement that stayed with us throughout the trip.
Naky Gaglo is more than a tour guide, he is a storyteller, a cultural ambassador, and a genuinely kind soul. Thanks to him, Lisbon was not just a destination, but a memory I will cherish for years to come.
Naky was a very knowledgeable host and provided lots of very detailed information the tour was very interesting and i learned lots and gave me much to ponder. Constructive feedback would be around the stop off at a local business it took too long to serve drinks and snacks which delayed the tour so consideration of places to stop that can house a large group of people would be useful. Overall it was a very positive experience lots of space to ask questions and engage in conversation. Also really enjoyed the group meal at mambo at the end of the tour
Naky’s tour is excellent. He explains clearly and answers all questions. It is so important to learn about history and see the connections to today’s experiences and attitudes. The tour was moving and made a lasting impression on me. Highly recommended.
I specifically came to Portugal to learn about their history with the slave trade. And it was incredibly important for my child to have exposure to this as well. I was initially disappointed when I couldn’t find anything and didn’t receive any recommendations.
After some digging, I found this tour! I am so glad we did and along the way learned why it was so hard to find any information about Portugal’s role in the slave trade. Naky was knowledgeable not only about the past, but current sociopolitical climate and its like to the history of colonization. He willingly answered questions and made the group feel welcoming. Many of the other group members had meaningful discussions from the topics we were learning. I would highly recommend.

My family and I greatly enjoyed this tour by Naky. He was extremely knowledgeable about Portuguese history and did a masterful job putting it all in context. He told the good, bad, and not so great – quite a balanced view of the country. African history is quite woven into the history even if not widely discussed or acknowledged. I highly recommend this tour to anyone seeking to leave Portugal more enlightened than upon arrival.
