The Transatlantic Slave Trade and Colonization: Two Troublesome Topics. Talking about the slave trade and colonialism continues to be a burden for most countries in the world. And yet these are subjects that need to be discussed so that the collective conscience knows much more about the other side of history that has been kept silent. On the contrary, the imperialist narratives are the most popular, reinforcing nationalist feelings and problems related to racism. In Portugal, this discourse is slowly gaining ground and constitutes a real philosophy that a part of the population cannot get rid of.
How can we remedy this and provide an alternative?
This is what motivated the creation of the ALT, designed to shed light on the important role of Portugal in the slave trade and colonization. During this half-day tour, the African Lisbon Tour covers the history of Portugal from the 15th Century, the beginning of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, to its abolition in the 20th Century.
During the 4-hour walk, we revisit the history and on the basis of documents, we discuss without taboos.
The African Lisbon Tour is intended to be a platform that attracts anyone who wants to interact with participants from all over the world; connect and grow with others while being challenged and discovering new perspectives and history. It allows you to see Lisbon’s neighborhoods with a different eye while admiring its beauty.
The tour begins in downtown Lisbon ( Praça do comércio) and ends at a restaurant where you will end the day with an authentic African meal, ending the tour having experienced Lisbon from a perspective that cannot be found anywhere else.
The tour began in 2014 when Naky Gaglo, a passionate about the history of the slave trade and colonization realized that a myth surrounded these stories and the contributions of Africans were completely erased from the curricula, monuments, museums and public spaces of Portugal.
This is a must-see if you live in Lisbon or if you are just passing through.

"A people that does not know its past, its origins and its culture is like a tree without roots."
