This was such a great experience. Being able to learn about the African history of Portugal with Naky was undeniably touching. Naky is very knowledgeable about history and has a true passion for spreading the truth. He is also very welcoming and encourages connecting with new people. To top it all off, he supports the local Black owned businesses in the area and has a wonderful rapport with them all. I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in Black people. Also, don’t be intimidated by the 4 hours of walking. It’s an easy pace and plenty of stops.

I truly enjoyed this tour. I appreciate Naky for his authenticity and ability to speak truth to power. From beginning to end, I learned so much about the Portuguese role in colonization and their denial of this history. I was so intrigued that it didn’t even feel like we were out for 4 hours! It was also thoughtful to have the group sit at the Lisboa bar halfway through the tour to listen to more history while enjoying the view and sipping on beverages. Finally, I enjoyed the dinner at the end at Mambo restaurant. It was a great way to end our time together. I highly recommend this activity for anyone who is visiting Lisbon for the first time and wants to learn the true Portuguese history and the Black experience.

This is the best tour I have experienced, and I have done many, in many different places. Naky provides a wealth of important information, in an engaging and accessible manner – allowing participants to understand the underlying history of Portugal and the African presence – including what may be uncomfortable truths to acknowledge, but necessary to confront to better connect the past to the present. The tour was fascinating and the time went by quickly. It was so good, I would do it again. There is a lot to learn and more to take in.

The African Lisbon Tour was one of the best experiences we’ve had while traveling. Naky was incredibly down-to-earth and easy to connect with. His knowledge of Black history, not just in Portugal, but across the world, added real perspective to every stop on the tour. He shared the history in a way that was honest, engaging, and respectful of the people whose stories are often left out.

What stood out most was how he made sure everyone felt included and taken care of. There was a real family atmosphere throughout the day, and it’s clear that he puts heart into what he does. We left feeling both educated and connected, and we’re definitely interested in joining one of his future tours.

This tour being amazing is an understatement. Naky did such a great job in explaining the history, going in depth, and making us tap into the emotions of our ancestors, through storytelling and the sights. What I loved most, however, was him allowing one on one introductions at the beginning of the tour, which allowed a bunch of random strangers to become family. The closeout dinner at an African restaurant was a perfect closeout to the day of learning. I would gladly do this again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Lisbon.

This tour was well-organized, informative and fun. If you’re a history buff, Naky begins the tour speaking on the pre-colonial era in Africa in order to ground the experience in truth (instead of going the traditional western route and starting with the slave trade). There was plenty of opportunities to ask questions, our guide even encouraged us to do so. Great accessibility methods such as the microphones and the mid-tour break. We got to hear about Lisbon’s past and present and I am so grateful for the time put into this experience, thank you.
